What is an Electrostatic Filter and How Does it Work?

With the spread of the pandemic, we have a better understanding of the need for air filtration maintenance. Many people tried to take precautions from the start, including using air cleaners, but there are so many options for air filtering these days that it may be daunting. At LifeSupplyUSA, we are experts at providing air filtration across all channels from HVAC to air purifying units.

You may be prepared with air cleaners and fresh HEPA filters, but what about your heating and cooling system? Have you checked that your HVAC system is up to par? They can also protect you from airborne particles and contaminants. Electrostatic filters are an excellent option for maintaining these systems while removing respiratory irritants.

Among our catalog, we have so many electrostatic filters that you're sure to find the size you need.

This article details the basics of LifeSupplyUSA electrostatic filters. What are they and how do they work? Why would you choose this filter over others? Find out more about these filters, including a list of pros and cons.

What Is An Electrostatic Filter?

Without any modifications, aluminum electrostatic heavy-duty filters will operate and replace any disposable or existing air conditioning/heating filter. These filters help purify the air of dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander, and other allergens which can help reduce the discomfort and irritation of allergy sufferers.

Static Electricity

LifeSupplyUSA electrostatic filters remove particles from the air by using static electricity as an advantage. They work by attracting and holding particles to their surface, which can then be removed for disposal. Electrostatic filters are made of a mesh design with a rugged aluminum frame, which prevents corrosion or rust. Some maintenance is required, but rest assured, these filters will last you for years to come.

How Does An Electrostatic Filter Work?

When the air enters the electrostatic filter, it is first split into two streams. One stream passes through a static plate, while the other stream bypasses it. The static plate has a high voltage applied to it which causes the particles in the air to be attracted to its surface. As an electrostatic charge is generated by the air flowing through the filter, contaminants are attracted like a magnet and held by the static charge, without the release until washed.

Wash & Reuse

After 30-90 days, it is advised to then remove the particles by washing the filter. One of an electrostatic filter's biggest advantages is that they are not disposable; you can wash and reuse it over and over again. This feature is the main reason why people opt for this filter.

To Clean:

Remove the filter, then vacuum or use a low-pressure hose on both sides. Then, rinse both sides with warm water to allow for the removal of stubborn particles. Before reinstalling, be sure to let the filter dry completely. The filter is symmetrical and can be reinstalled on either side!

For the removal of tough grease or smoke, you may have to scrub the filter with a mild household detergent such as hand wash or dish detergent.

Pros:

  • Wash and reuse: These filters are non-disposable and can be used repeatedly. Instead of spending money consistently, you can purchase one filter for a little more, that will last you for years.
  • Made of aluminum: Our filters are strong and sturdy, ensuring use for many years to come, and will not rust or corrode.
  • Safe for kids and pets: Electrostatic filters do not produce ozone like other filters do, which means it is safer for use around kids and pets.

Cons:

  • MERV 8 rating: Weaker than HEPA filters, electrostatics are rated at a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value of 8. Even so, they are perfectly suitable for home use and have no threat of damaging your HVAC system.
  • Wash frequency: For some people, the frequency in which you need to wash these filters might be a deal-breaker. Every 30 days might be excessive for some, but remember that 90 days is also fine and very manageable.

It is up to you to outweigh the pros and cons, but we think the pros triumph! They are heavy-duty, non-disposable filters that are safe around kids and pets. Rated at MERV 8, they are high-quality and perfectly suitable for home use (keep in mind that above MERV 13 is too excessive and could damage your HVAC system). And if 30 days is too much to maintain, you could opt for washing your electrostatic filter up to every 90 days!

    Electrostatic Filters Trusted by Professionals

In conclusion, electrostatic filters are a great choice for those looking for quality and durability in an air filter. With a washable and reusable design, these filters can be used for years to come without the need to replace them. If you are looking for a filter that is safe around kids and pets, does not produce ozone, and can be easily cleaned, then a LifeSupplyUSA electrostatic filter might be perfect for you!
